Gentlewoman Style – Women in Suits

Timeless, ageless and genderless, if we ever wonder about attire equally convenient for work or a big event, what comes to mind is The venerable Suit. This classic two piece set seems to defy the limits of age, time, convention and gender, yet remaining as the ultimate staple when it comes to making a statement.

It’s been a long time since the suit, apart from its conventional masculine association, was also accepted among women; and looking back centuries, when the first forms of the Suit, two piece set of garments crafted from the same cloth made their initial appearances, but for what it’s worth on this post let’s focus on the modern variant (early 19th century) which marked the beginning of a new era in fashion and a new sense of utter formality, elevated to an element of cult status- from wall street businessmen to gangsters; but it wasn’t until female Hollywood icons ahead of their time who dared to wear a man’s suit, like Marlene Dietrich and Katharine Hepburn, that suits revolutionized and redefined women’s fashion, making the use of pants popular and acceptable among women.

Although the working woman’s uniform of the skirted suit type evolved in the 1970s and 1980s, pantsuits (women’s suits with trousers) were formally introduced by designer André Courrèges in 1964, but were only gradually accepted as formal business attire. Of late a major comeback has taken shape since it was released from the conventional normcore wardrobe to be reborn as a style hit among celebs and street style muses.

Women ahead of their time,
Like Marlene Dietrich and Katharine Hepburn
whose love for suits and androgynous look,
helped to revolutionize and redefine women’s fashion,
making the use of pants popular

Mujeres adelantadas a su tiempo como

Whether to resemble a masculine allure, to feel empowered or simply to wander into androgynous lands, women have slowly embraced the suit without compromising their femininity.

As a fashion, suits are today more relevant than ever before, but back in the early 90’s it was undoubtedly an epic statement of a few. It’s been a while since a candid Julia Roberts made the headlines at the Golden Globes without a stylists assistance, regardless we can’t deny her then sloppy (nowadays it would be called “oversized”) suit was a true signature and reflection of who she was then and now – the Pretty Woman has stayed true to her style and love for suits, which can be spotted in the majority of her public appearances..

Simple but significant / Simple pero significativo

Sometimes a dress can overshadow the woman, but the suit will always make her stand out. Many celebs have literally eclipsed the most stunning gowns by just stepping onto the red carpet in a simple but significant suit.
